Gel nails are similar to acrylic nails, as they are made from the same family of acrylates – a combination of monomer liquid and polymer powder. The monomer liquid reacts with the polymer powder to from long polymer strands. The strands, when dry forms a hard resin that resembles a fingernail. Gel nails contain additional short chain monomers, known as oligomers that makes the nails more flexible. Oligomers are thicker in consistency and this reduces evaporation and odor, therefore explains why gel is sticky and odourless. 光療指甲類似水晶指甲，它們同屬壓克力樹脂家族─它結合溶劑單體及粉聚合單體的反應是從長鏈型聚合粉體而來，當型體呈現乾燥時，及形成一片硬 式的樹脂般，像極了手指甲。光療指甲包含了附加的短煉型單體，就是Oligomers,可使製作出來的指甲更 具彈性，Oligomers是濃稠且堅固性，並且可減少蒸發及氣味，所以這解釋 了為什麼光療膠是具有黏性且低氣味。
